Àwa l'a l'Ekó:
Translates to “we own Lagos.” Eko is like the New York City of Nigeria; it is the economic hub of the country.  It is home to the Awories, the Isaleko, Ijebu people, Badagry etc.  Because of the accommodating nature of the Yorùbá people, we have welcomed foreigners to live amongst us. We have leased lands to visitors from all over Nigeria;  however, many foreigners have taken to the rhetoric that Lagos is “no man’s land” Yorùbá people now feel the need to remind people that Àwa l'a l'Ekó and the land belongs to only the Yorùbá people, not the Fulanis, not the Igbos, not the Chinese that are creeping in–only the indigenous, Eko people.  As a Lagosian I find it insulting to say Lagos is no man’s land.
The masquerade on the tee is called the  Ẹ̀yọ̀, it is the most famous cultural festival in Lagos state. First staged in 1845, in honor of the late Oba Akintoye, it has remained a very significant festival.  The festival was to escort the soul of a departed Lagosian King, or Chief, and usher in a successor.  We celebrate the life and time of prominent, but departed Lagosians, in style.  This festival was definitely one of the hightlights of my childhood because I got to see my dad and uncles participates in our family   Ẹ̀yọ̀ tradition.
Eyo o Aye'le Eyo o, Eyo baba n teyin to n fi golu n sere, eyin oni sanwo onibode, odilee.  Ti oju o ba ti ehin igbeti, oju o ni t'eko le.  Eko o ni baje o.
