Proud Nationalist:

Contrary to what we were taught in school, Yorùbá people are not a tribe; we are a Nation–one that is bigger than Africa.  A tribe is a derogatory term given to us by the British.  We are a people of about 50 million in the Nigerian space, and also residing in neighboring countries like Togo, Ghana and Benin.  Yorùbá descendants–via the slave trade–are also about 40 million in Brazil. We are very visible in Cuba, Trinidad and Tobago, Guiana, and Haiti; a people with such a rich culture and significance to the world, cannot be classified as just a tribe.

With that said, we are not “A proud Tribalist” but we are “Proud Nationalist” because we identify as a nation, and vigorously support its interests, to the exclusion of other nations.  A tribe is a social division in a traditional society, consisting of families or communities linked by social, economic, and religious ties. That narrow definition does not define Yorùbá with a population more extensive than Britain's. ( Mr. Banji Ayiloge )
